Steering Clear Of Credit Card Fraud

In the second installment of our series on avoiding various forms of internet fraud, here are tactics for preventing online credit card fraud, as given by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

  • Never provide your credit card number unless the site is clearly secure and has an established business track record. Just because a site claims it’s secure doesn’t mean it is. The icon of a padlock in a site’s address bar serves as some assurance but it’s not a guarantee and can be forged. Inquire about the site’s encryption methods if you are unsure.
  • Always thoroughly research the company or person you’re purchasing from to make sure they’re legit. Inquire with the Better Business Bureau in the merchant’s region. Get a physical address for the company (other than a PO Box) as well as a telephone number, and try calling it. Don’t buy from merchants who decline to furnish this info.
  • Never consider special offers via unsolicited sellers you do not know.
  • Be very careful when purchasing from companies or individuals outside the U.S.
  • Compile a record of your account information and all of your cards, as well as the card companies’ support numbers. Keep them in a safe place, that’s also easily accessible, so you’ll have them on hand to call quickly if any transactions seem suspicious.

Internet fraud is rampant. If you’ve been the victim of any kind of internet fraud, call 800-449-4850. Art Matthews, fraud lawyer in Los Angeles at Matthews Law Firm, Inc. will provide the aggressive solutions necessary to win your case.
